Geography and territory

Perched on a hilly strip close to the sea, Bolgheri enjoys a microclimate perfectly suited for viticulture. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea moderates temperatures, providing warm summers and mild winters, while the surrounding hills shield the vineyards from cold winds. The soil, composed primarily of clay, sand, and gravel, offers optimal drainage, which is essential for cultivating grapes of exceptional quality.

History and tradition

Bolgheri's winemaking tradition is deeply rooted in antiquity, but it was in the 20th century that this land experienced a true revolution, thanks to the pioneering vision of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta. In the 1940s, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, the Marchese decided to plant international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon on his estate in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri. His intuition? That the Bolgheri terroir, with its maritime climate and well-draining soils, was ideal for creating world-class wines.

Thus, Sassicaia was born, initially produced for family consumption but soon recognized internationally in the 1970s, giving rise to the "Super Tuscan" phenomenon. These wines, although made from international grape varieties, have redefined Tuscan winemaking excellence, elevating Bolgheri to a global icon.

The grapes and wines of Bolgheri

Bolgheri is home to great grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, often combined to create complex and long-lasting blends. Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, is the star of many of the most renowned wines, such as Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore.
