Federico’s vision for his wine is unwavering: to achieve only the best results and to do so only when the conditions are right. This commitment to quality is at the heart of his winemaking philosophy. Federico produces wine exclusively from his vineyard in the best vintages, dedicating himself solely to crafting Bolgheri Superiore, the highest quality designation in the region. His standards are so exacting that if a season does not meet his criteria, no wine is produced. For Federico, it is not about quantity but the pursuit of excellence.

Bolgheri and Passion: The journey of Winemaker Federico Aldrovandi

In the world of wine, few regions evoke as much admiration as Bolgheri, and few stories are as compelling as that of Federico Aldrovandi, a winemaker whose passion for this renowned region has spanned more than two decades. Originally from Bologna, Federico’s journey to Bolgheri was driven by a dream—to create wine in one of Italy’s most prestigious wine areas. In 2014, this dream became a reality when he acquired a small vineyard, the smallest in the Bolgheri DOC area, with just under two hectares. Though his estate may be modest in size, the passion that fuels Federico is immense.

The Winemaker: Federico Aldrovandi

"My name is Federico Aldrovandi, and I am the owner of this small estate in Bolgheri," Federico shares with quiet pride. "I arrived here in 2014, to this small vineyard of just over one hectare, and my production is very limited: only 3,500 bottles, exclusively of Bolgheri Superiore. I believe it’s worth trying to extract the best from this bush-trained vineyard, one of the few in the area, producing only red wine and only in the years that allow it."

Bolgheri: Where tradition meets excellence

Federico's description of Bolgheri transcends mere geography. "Bolgheri is evocative," he explains, "because it represents more than a location on a map. It's a promise of excellence, a legacy of pioneering spirits who dared to challenge conventional wisdom about what Italian wine could be."

The region's serious approach to winemaking resonates deeply with Federico's own philosophy. "Here, excellence isn't an aspiration—it's a requirement," he notes. "From the most prestigious estates to the smallest producers like myself, there's an unwritten understanding that everything must be done with absolute precision and respect for tradition."

But what truly sets Bolgheri apart, according to Federico, is its embracing nature. "The wines of Bolgheri are like the people here—they welcome you with open arms," he reflects. "The tannins in our wines don't confront you; they embrace you. This same spirit of generosity extends to how the community welcomed me, a newcomer from Bologna, into their ranks."

A future rooted in tradition

Federico's vision for his estate reflects both ambition and humility. "My goal isn't to revolutionize Bolgheri winemaking," he explains, "but to add my voice to its chorus in a way that honors its legacy while expressing my personal interpretation of this extraordinary terroir."

His small vineyard, one of the few in the area still trained in the traditional bush-vine style, produces wines that combine power with elegance. Each vintage is approached not just as a production cycle, but as an opportunity to create something truly exceptional. "When conditions aren't perfect, we don't produce," he states firmly. "This isn't just about making wine; it's about making wine that's worthy of the Bolgheri name."

The Colli Bolognesi: Where the Land and Wine tell stories

Before his Bolgheri chapter, Federico's winemaking story began in a place where time moves at its own peaceful pace. The Colli Bolognesi, with its graceful hillside vineyards and air perfumed with the scent of earth, flowers, and ripening fruit, represents not just his origins but a centuries-old tradition of exceptional winemaking.

These hills south of Bologna, where Federico first established his roots in winemaking, are more than just geographical features. They are the keepers of generational wisdom, where families have worked the land for centuries, passing down the ancient art of vinification. The terroir here is exceptional: clay and limestone-rich soils combine with a generous climate to create perfect growing conditions. Hot summers concentrate flavors in the grapes, while mild winters provide the vines their necessary rest.

At the heart of this region lies the Pignoletto grape, an indigenous variety that captures the very essence of these hills. This versatile grape, producing both still and sparkling wines, offers an explosion of freshness and minerality that has become emblematic of the region. The area's recognition through its DOC status in 1995, and the elevation of Pignoletto Superiore to the prestigious DOCG level, stands as testament to the exceptional quality of these wines.

Federico's Colli Bolognesi legacy

It was in this rich viticultural landscape that Federico established the Aldrovandi farm in 2001, specifically in the Montebudello area of Monteveglio. Driven purely by his passion for wine, he developed a single hectare of vineyard with laser-focused precision. His mission was clear: to produce two exceptional wines that would honor this historic region - Alto Vanto red, crafted exclusively from Merlot, and Altovanto white, made from the indigenous Pignoletto.

These wines represent more than just bottles in Federico's portfolio; they are his tribute to a land where ancient rural traditions still pervade every aspect of viticultural life. Each vintage tells a story of the hills, the changing seasons, and the meticulous care taken in both vineyard and cellar.

While the region also produces notable Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon, Federico's choice to focus on Merlot for his red wine production was deliberate, allowing him to express his particular vision of what the Colli Bolognesi terroir could achieve. His Pignoletto, meanwhile, stands as his interpretation of the region's signature grape, crafted with the same attention to detail that would later define his Bolgheri productions.

Legacy in the making

Federico Aldrovandi's story in Bolgheri is still being written, one vintage at a time. His commitment to excellence, respect for tradition, and unwavering focus on quality over quantity have earned him recognition as one of the region's most interesting small producers. As he continues to craft wines that express both the power of Bolgheri's terroir and his personal winemaking philosophy, Federico remains deeply grateful for his role as a custodian of this remarkable wine region.

"In Bolgheri, we don't just make wine," he reflects, "we create expressions of this unique place, this special moment in time, and our own understanding of what wine can be. Every bottle is a story, and I'm honored to be one of its storytellers."

The significance of Federico's contribution to Bolgheri's wine culture lies not in the size of his production but in the depth of his commitment to excellence. His wines, produced in limited quantities and only in the finest vintages, have become sought-after expressions of what's possible when traditional winemaking meets uncompromising standards. As Bolgheri continues to evolve as one of Italy's premier wine regions, Federico Aldrovandi's small estate stands as a testament to the power of passion, precision, and patience in the pursuit of vinous excellence.

“In Bolgheri, I've found not just a vineyard, but a home. Every aspect of this place—the light, the wind, the soil—embraces you, much like the wines we craft here. My goal is simple: to create a wine that truly reflects the character of this extraordinary land. From such a small vineyard, I believe you can capture the essence of Bolgheri, the passion behind it, and the deep respect I hold for its traditions."

Marco’s personal notes

At Porcalorca, we are passionate about sharing the stories behind the wines we love. Federico's story is close to my heart, not just because of the exceptional quality of his wines but also because of the friendship we’ve built over the years. I first met Federico during my journey to becoming a sommelier. He wasn’t just my teacher—he was a mentor who deepened my love for the world of wine and, eventually, became a dear friend.

When Jeanette and I decided to bring Porcalorca to life, Federico was the first person I turned to for advice. Naturally, we also wanted to get his extraordinary wines to Danish wine lovers. In my eyes, Federico’s wines, whether from Bolgheri or the Colli Bolognesi, are true works of art. I’ve spent countless hours in the vineyard with him, listening to how he traded in the life of a successful sommelier and the allure of a luxury car for a plot of land, a vintage Fiat Montagna 455 tractor from 1971, and a dream to become a small but remarkable producer.

Federico often says, "When wine is made properly, it speaks for itself and doesn’t need to be described." And that’s precisely how I feel about his wines—they speak volumes on their own and are meant to be experienced, not just talked about. Federico’s love for his land and vines is evident in every bottle. He treats his vineyards with the utmost respect, handling nearly every aspect of production himself. For us at Porcalorca, it’s a true honour to share these enological gems with Danish wine enthusiasts.
