TUSCANY

Introducing the new Aldrovandi Bolgheri Superiore 2020, the latest vintage in our collection, crafted with the same dedication and precision as its predecessor, the 2019. Together with 2018, 2019, due to the exceptional seasoning in the field, are the most requested vintages in Bolgheri. Produced from a single hectare of bush-trained vines in the Lippini area above Via Bolgherese, this exceptional wine continues the Aldrovandi tradition of excellence. With a limited production of just 3,000 bottles, this 2020 vintage reflects the unparalleled care and craftsmanship of Federico Aldrovandi, making it a true collector’s piece.

Grape variety

Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot.

Vineyards of origin

The vineyards are located in a hilly area above Via Bolgherese, in the Lippini area, with soils that reflect the unique characteristics of the Bolgheri terroir.

Soil: Sandy-clay, alkaline, deep soil with a well-defined stony structure, often revealing fossil fragments such as small shells on the surface, reflecting the geological history of the region.

Training system: Bush-trained vines.

Season in the field: harvest is manual, only in exceptional vintage. Bush-trained vines are tended with great care to ensure the highest quality of grapes. Only the finest vintages are selected to produce this Bolgheri Superiore. In 2019 winter and spring temperatures were cooler than usual, causing a delayed start to the vegetative cycle. However, from late May onwards, the cycle accelerated as temperatures rose rapidly. The summer climate was sunny and stable, lasting until the end of the harvest, which proved excellent in every respect.

Average yield: 50 q/ha.

Vinification

The vinification of Aldrovandi Bolgheri Superiore is meticulously managed to fully express the potential of the grapes. The wine matures in carefully selected wooden barrels, imparting complexity and structure without overpowering its balance. A well-integrated wood influence adds a smoky note that enriches the finish.

Aging: a minimum aging period of 24 months, 12 of which are spent in French oak barriques.

Tasting notes

The wine displays an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, it is complex and refined, revealing pronounced aromas of black fruits and forest fruits, complemented by distinct balsamic notes and hints of Mediterranean scrub. The well-integrated wood imparts an elegant smoky note on the finish. On the palate, it is austere and fresh, showing perfect balance, with a well-structured tannic backbone and pleasing acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with returning savoury and mineral nuances.

Pairings

Ideal with game, particularly wild boar and braised red meats, and excellent when paired with hard-aged cheeses. Also perfect as a meditation wine.

Alcohol content and serving temperature

Alcohol content: 13,5% Vol.

Serving temperature: 16 - 18°C.
