Federico Aldrovandi: The Artisan of Bolgheri

“In Bolgheri, we don't just make wine - we create expressions of this unique place, this special moment in time, and our own understanding of what wine can be.”

Federico Aldrovandi

In a world where wine can feel increasingly industrial, Federico Aldrovandi stands quietly apart. He doesn’t chase volume, awards, or fanfare.

Instead, from the smallest estate in the prestigious Bolgheri DOC, he crafts something infinitely rarer: a wine that tells the truth - of the land, of the season, and of his own deep-rooted respect for tradition.

But this story doesn’t start in Bolgheri. It begins in the rolling Colli Bolognesi, where the rhythm of vineyard life is measured not in yields, but in generations.

From Bologna to Bolgheri: A Dream Spanning Two Decades

Federico’s path to Bolgheri was neither fast nor conventional. Originally from Bologna, his winemaking journey began in 2001 with a tiny one-hectare vineyard in Monteveglio. There, surrounded by clay-limestone soils and the whispers of rural wisdom, he learned the essence of slow, intentional winemaking. His wines - Alto Vanto Rosso (Merlot) and Altovanto (Pignoletto) - were not just expressions of terroir, but tributes to a land steeped in quiet dignity.

Still, his heart was drawn elsewhere: to Bolgheri, the coastal Tuscan region renowned for its Super Tuscans and French varietals. For over twenty years, Federico nurtured a dream to become part of this elite wine community. That dream came true in 2014, when he acquired a tiny, bush-trained vineyard, less than two hectares, on the Bolgheri DOC’s western edge.

The Smallest Estate with the Biggest Heart

"I produce only 3,500 bottles a year," Federico explains, with equal parts pride and humility. "All of it is Bolgheri Superiore. I only bottle in years that deserve it."

There is no compromise here. No shortcuts. Federico’s approach is rooted in quality over quantity, producing only in vintages that nature herself deems worthy. It’s a philosophy that feels radical in today’s market, but to Federico, it’s simply the only way.

His wine is born of a rare bush-vine system, one of the last in the Bolgheri area. It’s more difficult to manage, more demanding, but the results speak for themselves: elegant, structured reds that balance power with surprising grace.

Bolgheri: Where Precision and Generosity Coexist

“Bolgheri is evocative,” Federico says. “It’s not just geography - it’s a promise. A place where excellence is not optional, but assumed.”

Indeed, Bolgheri’s reputation rests on its unwavering commitment to precision - from the largest estates to tiny producers like Federico. Yet what captivated him even more was the region’s human warmth.

“The wines here are like the people: they don’t confront you- they embrace you,” he reflects. “That’s what welcomed me, a newcomer from Bologna, into this proud winemaking culture.”

In many ways, Federico’s story reflects Porcalorca’s core philosophy: that behind every exceptional bottle lies a soul, a family, a place. That wine is not just something to drink, it’s something to feel.

A Legacy in the Making

Federico isn’t here to revolutionize Bolgheri. “My goal,” he says, “is to add my voice to the chorus - one that honors tradition while offering my own interpretation of this terroir.”

Each vintage is treated as a canvas, not just a product cycle. He works with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, crafting structured yet fresh wines with aromatic lift, supple tannins, and a deep sense of place. When the year isn’t right, he doesn’t bottle. His silence becomes a statement of integrity.

At Porcalorca, we’re proud to work with winemakers like Federico - those who remind us that the best wines don’t shout. They whisper their stories to those who take the time to listen.

Taste the Story

Federico Aldrovandi’s Bolgheri Superiore DOC is not made every year. But when it is, it carries with it the essence of Bolgheri, the soul of Colli Bolognesi, and the quiet passion of a man who refused to compromise.

Because at Porcalorca, we believe every bottle should tell a story worth hearing.
