Nosiola

Trentino's Hidden White Grape

Elegant. Alpine. Unexpected.

Nosiola is Trentino's only indigenous white grape variety - a rare wine that has quietly flourished in the foothills of the Dolomites for centuries.

Known for its freshness, delicate aromas and remarkable versatility, Nosiola produces elegant dry wines while also giving life to one of Italy's most fascinating sweet wines: Vino Santo Trentino.

For those looking beyond Italy's famous grape varieties, Nosiola is a remarkable discovery.

Forget Everything You Think You Know About Italian White Wine

When people think of Italian white wine, they often think of Pinot Grigio.

Nosiola couldn't be more different.

This is a mountain grape.

Cool nights preserve its freshness, alpine breezes shape its elegance, and generations of winemakers have quietly protected a variety found almost nowhere else in the world.

Sometimes, Italy's greatest discoveries aren't the famous ones.

What is Nosiola?

Nosiola is an indigenous white grape variety native to Trentino in northern Italy.

Although relatively unknown outside the region, it has been cultivated for centuries and remains one of Trentino's most treasured native varieties.

The grape produces elegant, mineral-driven wines with vibrant acidity and subtle aromas, making it one of Italy's most distinctive alpine white wines.

What Makes Nosiola So Special?

Trentino's only native white grape

While many Italian regions cultivate numerous indigenous varieties, Nosiola remains uniquely tied to Trentino.

Freshness from the mountains

Cool alpine temperatures preserve natural acidity while sunny days allow the grapes to ripen slowly, creating wines with remarkable balance and elegance.

Two wines from one grape

Nosiola is equally admired as a crisp dry white wine and as the foundation of the extraordinary Vino Santo Trentino, where the grapes are dried for months before pressing.

A Grape with Ancient Roots

For centuries, Nosiola has been cultivated around Lake Garda and the Valle dei Laghi in Trentino.

Its name is believed to derive from the Italian word nocciola—hazelnut - a reference to the delicate nutty aromas that often develop as the wine matures.

Today, only a small number of dedicated producers continue to champion the variety, preserving an important part of Trentino's winemaking heritage.

DID YOU KNOW

One of Italy's rarest wines is made by only a handful of producers.

Made exclusively from Nosiola grapes in Trentino's Valle dei Laghi, Vino Santo Trentino follows a centuries-old tradition of naturally drying the grapes for months before pressing.

The wine's exceptional heritage has earned it Slow Food Presidium status, recognising both its cultural importance and the dedicated producers keeping the tradition alive.

VIGNETI DELLE DOLOMITI IGT - NOSIOLA - TRENTINO

The name of this exclusive wine comes from the union of Stefano and Marco's second-born children, Anna and Davide. It is crafted from the finest Nosiola grapes, grown in the vineyards of San Siro hill, bathed in sunlight and refreshed by the daily breezes that sweep through the Valle dei Laghi.

Grape variety

100% Nosiola.

Vineyards of origin

The family’s San Siro vineyards, sun-drenched and refreshed by the daily breezes that gently sweep through the Valle dei Laghi nested in between the Brenta Dolomites and Lake Garda.

Soil: On chalk-rich calcareous soils, Nosiola has found one of its ideal growing environments.

Training system: Guyot-trained espalier and Pergola Trentina, which represents the local tradition, providing natural protection to the clusters through its canopy, making it particularly suitable for the mild and breezy climate of the Valle dei Laghi.

Season in the field: The excellent climatic conditions ensured optimal phenological ripening, preserving aromatic precursors in the best possible way. This balance is beautifully reflected in the harmony between acidity and alcohol. The grapes, hand-harvested in crates, were picked at the middle of September.

Average yield: 50 q/ha.

Vinification

After being harvested at optimal ripeness, the Nosiola grapes are pressed, and the must ferments directly in acacia tonneaux.

Aging: 12 months acacia tonneaux, followed by 4 months in the bottle.

Organoleptic aspects

Straw yellow. The nose reveals aromas of flowers and white-fleshed fruit, such as ripe apple and apricot. On the palate, it is dry and rich, with a soft vanilla note, complemented by delightful minerality and savoriness. The finish is pleasantly bitter, with hints of hazelnut and almond.

Pisoni - Vino Santo Trentino DOC 2009

TRENTINO

Man, vine, soil, and climate—great wines are born from the intricate interplay of these elements. In the Valle dei Laghi, these factors form the foundation of an ancient tradition that continues to thrive, driven by the passion of its winemakers: the production of the prized Vino Santo Trentino.

This unique wine begins with the careful selection of the finest Nosiola grapes, an indigenous variety cultivated in a few select, old vineyards. The fully ripe grapes are laid out on racks, known as arele, and placed in attics. These spaces are naturally ventilated year-round by the "Ora del Garda," a characteristic breeze blowing from the nearby Lake Garda. The drying process lasts over five to six months, extending until Holy Week.

Once pressed, the naturally slow fermentation begins. Due to the extremely high sugar concentration, this process can take several years. After bottling, the wine's life begins anew, with its aging potential extending beyond fifty years.

Vino Santo Trentino is not just a wine—it is a testament to the history of this land and the enduring memory of its people.

Vinification

After being dried, the Nosiola grapes affected by noble rot are pressed, and the must ferments directly in small oak barrelsAging: 12 months acacia tonneaux, followed by 4 months in the bottle.

Amber yellow, deeply saturated with golden reflections. The nose offers an intense and persistent bouquet, evoking exotic fruits, dried apricot, medlar, and walnuts. On the palate, it is delicate, round, exceptionally harmonious, with an impressively rich structure.

Pairings

Traditionally paired with dry pastries, the Vino Santo Trentino is perfect paired with long matured alpine cheeses and blu-veined cheeses. Excellent with foie-gras. Alone, at the end of the meal, it is a perfect dessert.
