Madri Leone: Bottling the legacy of Italian women, one story at a time
In northern Puglia, two women are shaping a new narrative in Italian winemaking - where every bottle carries both a sense of place and the spirit of a woman who made history.
Women at the helm of heritage
At the crossroads of the Murgia and Gargano landscapes, Madri Leone is more than a boutique winery. It’s a living expression of Apulian identity, created by sisters Marilia and Linda - both mothers, entrepreneurs, and stewards of their family’s winemaking legacy.
Raised among vineyards and rooted in tradition, the sisters took very different paths before coming together to lead the winery.
Marilia stepped directly into the business, gaining deep knowledge from hands-on work in the cellar and laboratory. Her journey reflects discipline, persistence, and a quiet revolution against the norms of a male-dominated industry.
Linda, with a background in sociology and early ambitions in law, chose the vines for the opportunity to build something purposeful - grounded in equality, care for the land, and the power of representation.
Together, they’ve built Madri Leone on values that reflect both family heritage and forward thinking.
A collection of wines - and women’s stories
What makes Madri Leone truly distinct is its storytelling approach: each wine is named after an Italian woman who shaped history.
Whether it’s Busa, inspired by an ancient Apulian noblewoman, or Valla, honoring Italy’s first female Olympic gold medalist, the labels act as living tributes. These aren't branding gimmicks - they’re reminders that women have always contributed to culture, courage, and innovation, even if history hasn't always highlighted their names.
By intertwining wine and memory, the sisters create something lasting: a shared space where culture, identity, and craft converge.
A winemaking approach that lets the land speak
Madri Leone’s vineyards benefit from the unique microclimate of northern Puglia - close to the Adriatic Sea, cooled by mountain breezes, and enriched by mineral soils near the Ofanto River. These natural conditions yield expressive grapes with balance and depth.
In the cellar, the philosophy is minimal intervention. Fermentation happens in stainless steel only, without oak, to preserve the varietal character of native grapes like Nero di Troia and Primitivo. The result: wines that are clean, structured, and unmistakably Apulian.
It’s a deliberate choice that respects the raw material and avoids unnecessary manipulation - a commitment to authenticity, both in process and product.
Honoring the past, building the future
Starting a winery is never easy - especially in a region where tradition runs deep and expectations are high. But by staying true to local varieties, embracing a clear identity, and leading with purpose, Linda and Marilia have created something that resonates far beyond their 2 hectares of vineyard.
Madri Leone is not just a brand. It’s a statement: that women belong in wine at every level, and that telling stories - through labels, land, and labor - is a powerful way to connect with the world.
