Le Corne: A timeless legacy in Bergamo’s vineyards

Nestled at the edge of Valcalepio, just across the Oglio River from Franciacorta, Le Corne is more than a winery—it's a testament to centuries of Italian winemaking heritage. Located in the heart of Bergamo, the vineyard spans 30 hectares of south-facing land, blessed with a unique microclimate that perfectly suits viticulture. The name "Le Corne" is derived from the "Corna", a dialect term used to identify the rocky outcrop from a hill or a mountain.

The team at Le Corne, shares this commitment, contributing their expertise to ensure that each bottle reflects the rich heritage and meticulous care invested in its creation.

Le Corne’s history is deeply intertwined with the land itself, tracing back to the late Middle Ages. The estate's origins can be traced to the 14th century, in a hamlet unified with the municipality of Grumello del Monte. Historical records from as early as 1355 mention "Le Corne" as a site where the Schiava grape was cultivated, highlighting the area’s long-standing viticultural tradition. By the 16th century, the Agosti family had established a significant presence in the area, all bearing the name "Corne," with the central one—known as "Corne della Torre"—dominating the landscape with its iconic tower, still standing at the entrance of the historic winery.

Le Corne’s winemaking philosophy is centered around sustainability and tradition, striking a delicate balance between age-old practices and modern techniques. Since 2016, the vineyard has fully embraced organic farming. The estate’s approach to winemaking is characterized by minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes to shine through while preserving the integrity of the terroir. Techniques such as careful grape selection, precise fermentation processes, and the use of state-of-the-art equipment ensure that every bottle of Le Corne wine is a true expression of its origins.

Connection to the Land: The terroir of Le Corne

The terroir of Le Corne is a symphony of elements -ideal altitude, and south-facing slopes— that work together to produce wines of exceptional quality. The vineyard’s location, with its unique microclimate, benefits from the cooling breezes of the surrounding hill, which protect the grapes and allow for a longer ripening period. This results in wines with a perfect balance of acidity, richness, and complexity.

Challenges and Triumphs: Overcoming Adversity

Le Corne has faced its share of challenges, from navigating the transition to organic farming to adapting to changing market demands. However, these challenges have only strengthened the company’s resolve. The successful conversion to organic farming stands as a testament to the team’s dedication to sustainability, earning Le Corne recognition as a leader in organic wine production in the region.

Looking to the Future: Vision and Goals

As Le Corne looks to the future, the focus remains on innovation and sustainability. Plans are underway to expand the vineyard’s organic offerings, introduce new varietals, and continue exploring the potential of the Bergamasque terroir. The vision is clear: to honor the legacy of the past while embracing the possibilities of the future.

Marco’s personal notes

During our journey with Porcalorca, Jeanette and I felt a deep responsibility to carefully select the producers and wines we proudly bring to Danish wine lovers. This quest has led us to discover extraordinary places and passionate people, and Le Corne is a shining example.

A few years ago, as an aspiring sommelier, I had the opportunity to visit Le Corne. From the moment I arrived, Cinzia and Monica, who handle guest relations, warmly welcomed me. What struck me immediately was the meticulous care that permeates every aspect of the winery.

Every detail, from the spotless cleanliness of the facilities and machinery to the precise management of the barrel room, reflects a complete dedication to quality. Even the way the wine is served—at the perfect temperature, in the ideal glass—shows a passion beyond production. I was captivated by the stories of how skilled hands carefully select the best grapes, ensuring that only the finest make it to the vinification process.

Tasting the wines cemented my connection with Le Corne. Every sip revealed precision, cleanliness, finesse, and elegance, with a perfect balance of body and structure where needed. Each wine tells a story—not just of the land it comes from but of the passion and care that Cinzia and her team pour into every stage of production.

This visit wasn’t just a fond memory but an important moment for Porcalorca. I knew then that these wines had to be part of our selection. Their quality, combined with the history and passion I witnessed in every detail of the winery, made them the perfect choice to present to Danish consumers, who increasingly seek authentic, high-quality products.

Today, I am proud to offer Le Corne's wines through Porcalorca, confident that each bottle carries with it a piece of this extraordinary story, sure to captivate and win over even the most discerning palates.
