Cascina di Mela: A Family’s Soul in Every Glass

In Montà d’Alba, in the heart of Piemonte’s Roero region, Cascina di Mela is more than a winery, it’s a living family album, where every bottle carries a name, a face, and a story.

Led by Davide and Daniele, the estate draws its name from “Mela”, the affectionate nickname of their maternal family line. This is not just a nod to heritage, it is the essence of their winemaking philosophy: honoring the people and places that shaped them.

In the rolling hills of Roero, Cascina di Mela is more than a winery -it is a tribute to family history. Led by brothers Davide and Daniele, the estate takes its name from “Mela,” the beloved nickname of their maternal lineage, whose legacy continues to inspire every wine they produce. Working with Roero's distinctive sandy and calcareous soils, they craft expressive Arneis, Nebbiolo, and Barbera while also tending a small Barolo vineyard in Verduno. Their wines reflect the character of Piemonte’s lesser-known treasures, combining authenticity, elegance, and a deep respect for the generations who came before them.

A Journey Through Time: Roots in Roero

For generations, the Mela family has tended these sandy, chalky soils, producing wines that reflect both the elegance of Roero and the resilience of those who work its land. Their philosophy is rooted in the rhythms of a farmer’s life, hard work, patience, and an unshakable connection to the earth.

The Roero landscape, harmonious mix of vineyards, orchards, and wooded hills, shapes every variety they grow. Nebbiolo finds grace here, Arneis shows a fresh and mineral edge, Barbera reveals a confident yet generous spirit, and Barolo displays the majestic complexity for which it is famed (Daniele and Davide also have an heritage of a vineyard in San Lorenzo di Verduno in the Barolo area).

The Winemakers: Davide and Daniele

Davide oversees the vineyards with a farmer’s instinct and a perfectionist’s eye, ensuring each grape speaks clearly of its origin. Daniele carries these stories to the world, sharing not just wines but the people behind them. Every label in their collection bears the name of a family member or figure who left a mark on their lives, each with a personality mirrored in the wine itself.

There is Rusina, their grandmother: elegant, determined, and warm, embodied in a Barbera d’Alba of depth and grace. Pa, their grandfather and family patriarch, is honored with a Barolo of power and wisdom. Don Messa, the eccentric village priest, lives on in a Moscato as joyful and spirited as he was. These are not just wines, they are portraits in liquid form.

Marco’s personal notes

Our time at Cascina di Mela was more than a winery visit, it felt like stepping into a family gathering where the table is long, the stories flow freely, and every bottle poured is a thread connecting past and present.

Tasting through their wines is like reading a series of love letters, to the Roero, to their ancestors, to the craft itself. Each glass invites you into their world, offering not just flavors but the soul of a family deeply rooted in its land.

At Porcalorca, we value winemakers who allow their vineyards to speak clearly, and Cascina di Mela’s voice is one of elegance, authenticity, and deep respect for the land and family. We are proud to share these wines with our community, where every bottle tells a story.
